DCYOP needs your help to support our paper orchestra!

On Saturday, November 1st from 9 am to 3 pm, DCYOP is holding a cardboard and art supplies drive to support our newest initiative – the Children’s Orchestra.

Led by Associate Artistic Director Ken Whitley and located at Garrison Elementary School, the Children’s Orchestra is an after school string program that aims to enhance DCPS elementary students’ interest in learning, strengthen their connection to school and improve their social and academic skills. Since September 2014, fifteen students meet for two hours a day, three times a week to learn a string instrument and play in an orchestra. Recently, DCYOP welcomed a new teaching artist to the Children’s Orchestra – Derek Powell. Armed with two great teachers, we look to expand the project and need your help.

We need your help! On Saturday, November 1st, please bring any extra cardboard or art supplies you may have at your house. Moving boxes, cereal boxes, poster board – we’ll take it all! Have pom poms, markers, tape or cotton string? We need those too! Please bring them to W136 at Eastern High School – a box next to Maestro Whitley’s desk will be happy to accept them.

Are you unable to attend on Saturday but still want to donate? Contact Maestro Whitley at kenneth@dcyop.org

Thanks in advance for your support!
